A significant portion of men are in great shape whose motivation is to reduce their breast tissue, that all humans are born with, only to realize they can have large pectoral muscles and breast tissue. These patients can be helped with male breast reduction surgery.
What is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is a condition of over-developed or enlarged breasts in men and can occur at any age. The condition can be the result of hormonal changes, heredity, obesity or as a side effect of certain drugs.
Gynecomastia can cause emotional discomfort and have a negative impact on your self-confidence. Some men may even avoid certain physical activities or intimacy as they are embarrassed.
Gynecomastia surgery reduces breast size in men, flattening and enhancing the chest contours. In severe cases of gynecomastia, the weight of excess breast tissue may cause the breasts to sag and stretch the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple). In these cases, the position and size of the areola can be surgically improved and excess skin can be reduced.
Symptoms of Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia is characterized by certain physical symptoms, including:
- Excess localized fat
- Excess glandular tissue development
- In some cases, excess breast skin
- Either one or both breasts are enlarged

What Should I Expect During the Recovery Period?
During the recovery period, dressings or bandages will be applied to the surgical sites. An elastic bandage or support garment may be used to minimize swelling and support your new chest contour as it heals after surgery. A small, thin tube may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid that may collect.
You will be provided with full aftercare instructions, and prescriptions for medications to apply or take orally to aid healing and reduce the potential for infection. You will have scheduled follow-up appointments with our plastic surgeon to ensure your healing is proceeding as it should.
Results from a Male Breast Reduction
Gynecomastia surgery results are immediately visible. As the swelling reduces and incision lines fade, the satisfaction with your new image can be a life-changing experience. The final results of your gynecomastia surgery may take three to six months. Incision lines will remain but fade over time. Your improved upper body will likely enhance your self-image and confidence, whether in a shirt and tie, a T-shirt, or enjoying summer activities shirtless, whether boating, at a beach, or poolside, or in more intimate settings.
