A chemical peel can turn back time and give you a youthful, glowing, supple appearance. Sun-damaged skin can be smoothed out and the skin transformed. This is an important treatment to include as a part of your regular skin care and maintenance routine. But how often should you get one?
At our medspa at Rashid Plastic Surgery, we can help set up a schedule for your chemical peel treatments that works well for your needs and skin care goals. First, let’s walk through some facts about chemical peels.
What happens during a chemical peel?
A chemical peel evens out and rejuvenates the skin. Sunspots and natural discoloration fade away, and acne scars are reduced. Fine lines and wrinkles are smoothed, and the skin looks plumper and more supple.
We will apply a chemical solution to the top layer of the skin to exfoliate it and remove oils, toxins and dead cells from the surface of the skin. The treatment reveals new, fresh skin underneath.
There are three levels of chemical peel: light, medium and deep. The medium and deep peels remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin, but also from the inner layers as well.
Benefits of chemical peels
Chemical peels have many benefits, including:
Reducing shallow wrinkle, fine lines and creases
Erasing signs of sun damage
Stimulating collagen production
Helping produce new cells
Reducing mild scars, such as acne scars
Lightening or erasing dark spots and age spots
Smoothing skin tone and regularizing pigmentation irregularities
Helping resolve acne
Leaving the skin smooth, rejuvenated and radiant
Types of chemical peels and their benefits
During a chemical peel, you will feel a warm sensation. For deeper peels, you will receive a numbing agent to help with any discomfort. Most clients find their chemical peel treatments to be virtually pain-free.
Light
- Smooths fine lines and wrinkles.
- Minimizes the appearance of scars
- Evens out skin tone
- Softens and cleanses skin
Medium
- Minimizes deeper wrinkles and scars
- Creates softer, plumper, more supple skin
- Smoothes skin tone and texture
- Reduces or erases age and sunspots
Deep
- Delivers a pronounced effect on minimizing deep wrinkles and scars
- Greatly reduces or erases age and sunspots
- Smooths skin tone and texture
- Creates markedly softer, plumper, more supple skin
- Combats the signs of age
What is the best schedule for my chemical peels?
All chemical peel treatments are effective, but the medium and deep peels are designed to address larger or more severe concerns and produce more dramatic and pronounced results. However, these more intense treatments can’t be done as often as a light peel.
How often you should receive a chemical peel varies based on what type of chemical peel treatment you’re getting and what your specific concerns, skin damage and goals are. As a general rule of thumb you can follow these guidelines:
- If you are receiving a light peel, you can enjoy this treatment monthly.
- For medium peels, wait four to six months between treatments.
- Deep peels are more intense and should be done once every few years.
